Distance
5 km from the tank.
A short drive to the Mahamaham tank, clear of the old town's festival crush. Cars and autos run it in about fifteen minutes, and you sleep two kilometres from the Swamimalai temple instead of an hour outside town.

February 2028 · Kumbakonam
Once every twelve years, nine sacred rivers are said to gather in the Mahamaham tank. Families return from across the world for a single dip. We hold family rooms early for the pilgrims who plan ahead.
What is Mahamaham
The twelve-year tank festival
Once in twelve years
Mahamaham is the twelve-year temple festival of Kumbakonam, held when Jupiter enters Leo and the Tamil month of Masi turns full. On the appointed morning, families from across Tamil Nadu, India, and the diaspora travel to bathe in the four-acre Mahamaham tank at the centre of the temple town.
Tamil tradition holds that nine sacred rivers (the Ganga, Yamuna, Godavari, Saraswati, Narmada, Kaveri, Sarayu, Krishna, and Tungabhadra) gather in the tank for that single morning. The rite is anchored at the Adi Kumbeshwarar Temple, which stands a few hundred metres from the water and gives Kumbakonam its name (kumbam, the sacred pot).
The 2028 festival falls in late February. Pilgrims arrive in the days before, the town fills, and rooms within walking distance of the tank become near-impossible to find by January. The dip itself takes minutes. The journey to be there takes weeks of planning.
Why JS Grand
Why families choose JS Grand for the Mahamaham: distance to the tank, rooms held in advance, and one person handling the visit.
Distance
A short drive to the Mahamaham tank, clear of the old town's festival crush. Cars and autos run it in about fifteen minutes, and you sleep two kilometres from the Swamimalai temple instead of an hour outside town.
Planning
Block your family rooms before the pilgrims fill the town. Twenty-eight rooms across one courtyard: two suites for the elders, a family suite for the cousins, twenty-four doubles for the rest. Reserve the cluster, not just a room.
Coordination
One point of contact for the whole multi-day visit: the dawn dip, the temple darshan, the priest who travels with you, the meals between. Filter coffee at four in the morning. A car waiting when the rite is over.
Booking now open
Rooms confirmed on early enquiries. The tank fills, then the lanes, then the rooms, usually in that order. Plan now and arrive without the scramble.
For the long visit
Once the Mahamaham morning is past, the town opens up again. Walk the temple lanes, sit with a tumbler of degree coffee, and read about the family that built the hall.
