Tamil tradition holds that nine sacred rivers (the Ganga, Yamuna, Godavari, Saraswati, Narmada, Kaveri, Sarayu, Krishna, and Tungabhadra) gather in the tank for that single morning. The rite is anchored at the Adi Kumbeshwarar Temple, which stands a few hundred metres from the water and gives Kumbakonam its name (kumbam, the sacred pot).
The date carries its own significance: Mahamaham 2028 falls in late February, when the Tamil festival aligns with the full moon of Masi and Jupiter's twelve-year turn into Leo.
